Is all Pain Equal?
Hmmmm..... I have been thinking about this from a long time now. Every time I was talking to a friend who is telling me about the problems he has and he tells "Not as bad as your situation", I cant help but wonder IS IT?It is very obvious we can classify problems as more problematic and less problematic. I would rather have problem A than problem B. But is it truly the case for the people who are going through those hardships?
Lets see from this perspective, pain is nothing but a chemical reaction triggered in your bodies(I'm talking about mental pain), like having an heartbreak or getting rejected by that company you had always wanted to work in or having to think about money when your kid asks for a toy and you have this pain of being "Inadequate", etc. For a person sitting outside and seeing, it might be very easy to rank these problems in an order. But is it so in reality? If so where is that difference arising from? Does our brain produce less or more of the "Pain chemical" in response to different problems? Not from my experience.....
Lets take a very common example of two college students, lets assume but are pretty good looking guys (might be relevant). Student A's family is an open minded family that is okay with their son hanging out with people and dating the girl he likes etc., on the other side of the spectrum we have student B, whose family is pretty orthodox and doesn't like the son hanging out with other gender and dating is pretty much a taboo in their house. Now, Student A is a hopeless romantic trying to find a girl to fall in love with but to the girls he is interested in him aren't interested in him, which takes a toll on him and he is suffering that pain of rejection again and again. Now for student B, he has a very beautiful girl, literal goddess, who loves him and he loves her as well, but his inability to stand up against his family traditions has taken this relationship as a sacrifice. As you can see although there are things that can be done to overcome these problems, lets focus on the problems it self. Is pain of student A greater than that of student B? Is their pain greater than someone who has been dumped? Is the pain of a homeless man comparable to their pain?
You might thinking whattttttt? obviously the pain of the homeless man is much greater. But, IS IT? We all have that one main problem in our lives, yep that one the one that just came to your mind, the one that keeps you up at night. All of us have different problems but is the way we are feeling also different? Someone with a stoic mindset might beg to differ but for the most of us, we are constantly worrying about that one thing, in despair. Just this once if things go my way it will be all better. What about the next problem we face wont it be the same feeling again?
Running head first into these problems and coming out of it with a different outlook an world is what life is all about. Is the pain of not having money and not having someone to talk to tonight, the crushing pain of loneliness all that different? I get this thought when I'm watching a celebrity interview and they express their problems and for the most for us being able to have that problem is a dream. But from the perspective of that celebrity is the hardship they are going through induce the same amount of pain? is that person also feeling what I'm feeling in my life?
P.s. This is all the thoughts in my head so if I have said something stupid that's probably because I'm stupid and inexperienced in life.
Peace,
Mr. Pista
